With *Bérénice*, director Jean-René Lemoine reimagines Racine’s famous tragedy through a contemporary interpretation centered on waiting, desire, and the impossibility of fully experiencing love. Bérénice, Queen of Judea, has been waiting for several days for Titus, who has become Emperor of Rome. But the power and rules imposed by the Roman Senate prevent Titus from marrying a foreign queen. Caught between love and duty, the characters find themselves facing a separation that seems increasingly inevitable. The staging favors a minimalist aesthetic, with an almost bare stage and contemporary costumes. The actors’ bodies, the silences, and their voices thus become essential to conveying the tensions and emotions that run through this classical tragedy.
